Progress requires concentrated effort

Food for thought (for me, and maybe for you): Don’t let comparison stop you from starting the work you need to do to get where you want to go.

Someone made a comment the other day about how I made handstand things look too easy, and it was said in a way in which they felt disbelief in themselves when watching me do this skill that I’ve spent A LOT of time developing. I literally felt this person put themselves in the container of, “I could never.”

I started playing upside down when I was a kid and developed the walks and such throughout my wrestling career. But where I’m at right now—the ability to walk over objects (sometimes) and go through obstacle courses and do free-standing things, or complete 300’ of handstand walk in a workout? That level has mostly been developed since January and I can confidently say I put in the fricken work to get where I’m at. And guess what? I’m NOT anywhere near where I want to be. But I do have a track record of showing up and doing the work, and I lean on that to know that I CAN make focused progress. I expect to be better because I am doing work that supports it.

How did YOU get good at something you excel at?

Here’s a phrase to consider when you see someone doing something really well: “I bet they worked their ass off to develop that skill.” And then try this out: “If I prioritize learning this skill through a progression, I CAN improve.” How does that make you feel? Do you have a track record with yourself that supports this kind of statement?

Give yourself permission to develop a skill. Note small wins and even setbacks. I promise if you start to take note you’ll start thinking more things that show you that if you keep promises to yourself your track record becomes bulletproof and produces resiliency. You can do hard things. You can do new things. This translates to every area of life.

Just some things I thought about this afternoon. And, as I am writing this post, my shoulders are exhausted as ever 🐺✌🏽

♾ cheers to understanding life through sport.
